OTW TV: Boston Harbor Blackbacks

OTW TV Producer Matt Rissell was kind enough to write up another blog post from the TV Shoot they filmed this week. He was not kind enough, however, to save me any fillets or invite me along for the Cooking The Catch segment at Pops’ house. I’ll remember that, Matt.

Winter flounder are back with a vengance in Boston Harbor

Ron Powers, contributing OTW writer and avid flounder fisherman has been telling OTW Publisher Chris Megan and I that we needed to film the recently rebounded and flourishing winter flounder fishery.

Chris and I brought the camera’s up to Quincy on June 21 and joined Ron and Capt. Jason Colby of Little Sister Charters. After a 10 minute run, we dropped anchor and some chum bags. Chris was the first to hook-up and land a healthy flounder, Ron hooked-up almost immediately after that, and Capt. Colby landed the third flounder in a matter of minutes. It helps when you have a captain like Jason who puts you right on top of some awesome structure. Though it was my first time fishing for blackbacks, I quickly learned that flounder fishing is relaxing and fun way to spend the day.

Around the turn of the century, Boston Harbor was known as “The Flounder Capital of the World,” and people from all

over the Northeast would flock there to rent skiffs to take out fishing. Due to pollution and overfishing, the flounder took a pounding, and until recent years, both the harbor and fishery were in serious trouble. Now the flounder are back and bigger than ever. We caught fish after fish using clams and sea worms as bait.

After 2 hours of fishing we limited out on flounder and it was time to head back to fillet. Jason made filleting the dozen or so flounder look effortless – he made is way through the bucket in a mater of minutes and sent us home with a cooler full of fresh fish to take over to Dave “Pops” Masch back on Cape Cod. Nothing better than ending a great day of fishing with a simple but elegant meal that Pops said he’d, “serve to anyone in the world.”
