OTW TV Salmon River Kings and Cohos

In mid-October, Andy Nabreski, Matt Rissell and I joined Scott Glazier of Tinker Tavern Lodge and Don Kingsley of Tight Lines Guide Service for two days of excellent fishing during the famous fall salmon run in Pulaski, New York. We hooked tons of fish, landed a few and had a great time. Be sure to look for this episode when the new season of OTW TV airs in 2012.

Salmon River King Salmon Fishing Regulations
With fishing not allowed until 30 minutes before sunrise, we eagerly waited while listening to 15- to 30-pound salmon crash around in front of us.

When the sun finally did come up, it didn't take long for Scott to connect. With the leaves at their fall peak, the surroundings were almost as breathtaking as the screaming runs made by the hooked fish.

Don was hooking up regularly as well. Here, he's bringing a big male king salmon to the bank.

These "Jacks" or smaller king salmon were all over the river, fighting with each other as they attempted to get close to ripe females. These fish enter the river after only two years in the lake, unlike the larger kings which have spent three years in Lake Ontario.

Landing these fish is an incredible challenge. We lost way more fish than we brought to the net. I went an impressive 0/14 on my hook ups, which is all the more reason to get up there again! The fish in this photo parted the leader after a 50-yard run upstream.

Scott Glazier Big Leaping Steelhead
Scott hooked up a giant 15-pound-plus steelhead that spent almost as much time out of the water as in it.

Steelhead aerial jumping
Andy Nabreski stands ready to net Scott's trophy steelhead as it continues to do cartwheels all over the river. But, as happened with the majority of hooked fish on the Salmon River, this one managed to escape, snapping the line in mid air right after this photo was taken.

Giant COho Salmon Pulaski Male Coho
One of the most impressive catches of the trip was this massive male coho salmon caught by Scott. Cohos don't get as big as kings, but what they lack in size, they make up for in beauty and strength.

Coho salmon can be told apart from kings by their pinkish coloration. Male cohos develop a large hooked "beak."

Overall, it was an excellent trip in beautiful surroundings, and I can't wait to get back in a few weeks when the steelhead run is on!
