Is The Water Your Lab?

While walking the aisles of the International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades last summer, among the sea of largemouth bass and southern species lures, one new lure company caught our eye.

FishLab Tackle is based in Ontario, California, which is a long way from the Northeast striper scene, yet several of their offerings, clearly seemed made with striped bass fishing, particularly Cape Cod Canal striped bass fishing, in mind.

Mike Bennett who works in product development explained that for FishLab’s initial offerings, he wanted to focus on two fisheries he’s passionate about—largemouth bass and Northeast stripers.

Bennett had visited the Cape Cod Canal while working with another lure company, and loved the fishery. He also saw how he better could craft lures to handle the Canal’s heavy currents.

The Mack Attack Hard Swimbait is a double-jointed swimbait with realistic flourishes to make it look like the Northeast’s most potent blitz fuel, the Atlantic mackerel. The bait is larger-bodied and has a tight swimming action that Bennett explained is better suited for strong current. Swimbaits with a wider action will “blow out” and not swim effectively during the strongest parts of the tide, which is when the stripers feed the heaviest.

The Mack Attack Hard Swimbait is offered in five different mackerel patterns:

Mack Attack mackerel patterns
Blue Mack, Purple Mack, Green Mack, Ghost Mack, Whacky Mack

and two attractor patterns:

Mac Attack attractor patterns
Bone, Red Head/White Body

There are four models of the Mack Attack Hard Swimbait to match the forage size and current speed/depth of the location.

  • Slow Sinking:
    • 7 inch, 2.5 ounce
    • 9 inch, 5.33 ounce
  • Fast Sinking:
    • 7 inch, 3 ounce
    • 9 inch, 6 ounce

Mack Attack Soft Swimbait

The Mack Attack Soft Swimbait is a paddle tail swimbait that is designed to be fished in heavy current or deep-water presentations such as jigging or dropping. This bait can even be slow-trolled. The Soft Mack Attack comes in three lengths and weights to get you dialed in on your particular presentation. The 6 ½”, 5.5-ounce size is the sweet spot for most striper-fishing applications and can be cast and retrieved, slow-trolled or jigged on a straight drop. The paddle tail is designed to have a seductive kick, and the bait also features a heavy duty jig hook that will hold up to the largest and hardest fighting striper.

FishLab Mad Eel

FishLab’s take on the paddletail, the Mad Eel, is designed for boat, beach, and Canal. The rounded head is designed to scoot over rocks, and won’t dig into sandy bottoms like pointed jigheads, Bennett said. The head shape also provides a rolling action in current, sending out fish-attracting vibrations even in the dark.

Packages come with one head and two replacement tails. Each replacement tail has a chamber in the front of the bait to ensure straight rigging, and it easily fills with crazy glue to keep the bodies on the head, even when fish are striking short. Every bait has a spot on the back to bring the hook point out to ensure the hook is deep enough in the bait and each bait will run straight. Fishermen can also buy three-packs of the replacement tails.

Mad Eels are available in three sizes:

  • 7 inch, 2.25 ounce
  • 7.5 inch, 3.5 ounce
  • 8 inch, 5.25 ounce

and 7 colors:

  • Black Ice
  • Blue Ice
  • Sandeel
  • Pearl White
  • Green Glow
  • Blue Mackerel
  • Green Mackerel

Bennett said all of FishLabs baits—which includes nearly a dozen freshwater, inshore, and offshore lures—are focused on small details that can make big difference. This includes hardware that can handly big fish out of the package, the right hook quality and gauge to hook and hold big fish, and a number of small realistic flourishes on each lure that help convince the fish to strike.

About FishLab

“The water is our lab and we love research! We know there’s a reason when a lure works, and that angling is part art and part science. It’s a puzzle where the pieces constantly change, sometimes in our favor… sometimes not. But, by applying decades of experience, bold creativity, a little patience and a lot of time on the water, we can better the odds of finding that successful formula. We know that making effective lures means understanding the target fish and the food they eat… and we do! FishLab lures are realistic, scientifically accurate, meticulously crafted, well made, and designed for one purpose… to catch fish! FISHLAB. SCIENCE OF THE STRIKE.”

I am a charter captain out of Menemsha on MV. I intend to test/use these lures early this season. Could a stinger hook be employed and not have a negative effect on the paddle-tail model ? Like your direction and are there plans for other bait fish imitations ie. Herring, Menhaden and Mullet ?
