Spearfisherman Tim Fiordaliso of Mount Holly, New Jersey weighed in a 33-inch 14.55-pound summer flounder (fluke) on July 27, reported Fisherman’s Headquarters in Ship Bottom, New Jersey. If accepted by the International Underwater Spearfishing Association (IUSA) it would become the spearfishing world record for fluke.
Fiordaliso shared the catch in the online forum The Outdoorsmen’s Voice: “I saw a decent fluke on a dive, decided to make another dive before the current moved me. I made it about 10 feet out and saw a giant sitting on the bottom. I swam up to him carefully, gun pointed the entire time, got over him and aimed for 5 seconds to ensure I wouldn’t miss… I didn’t even realize what I had shot until I got out and measured him. After deciding to go weigh him at Fishermans HQ, I really realized I had accomplished something special. I texted a buddy and he says DO NOT CUT THAT FISH UP! Well, long story short, pictures taken, documentation done, now all I have to do is my part and submit it.”

Congrats man thats one hell of a catch!!!
I caught a 32 inch 14 pound fluke right next to bell 8 outside the mouth of the ct river and made the mistake of fligeting it.. Would probably b ct record but hey I know what I caught and I have pictures.. Caught on a snapper blue
Matt, you should post some pictures that must have been a fun catch.
Thats hard to believe something that big a fluke at that and you cut it up without checking thats what i call a fluke lol
Spear fishing is really not fishing… it should be banned.
Josh, I agree spear fishing is a bunch of BS
What’s wrong with spearfishing??its a sport just like fishing.
Yeah. It’s not like there is any challenge to going underwater, under human power, fighting current and cold and diving to depths unknown to search the entire ocean floor for one fish that you can get within 5′ to assess that it is a keeper, aim, and shoot. It’s much more challenging to sit your fat butt on a boat and drink a few beers while drifting the bottom with the rod in a holder BSing with friends until you happen to float across that spot where the fish is.
Neither of you know what your talking about. It is much harder than RnR..You’re just pissed bc you don’t do it..Your ignorance is sad..
Agreed
Joshua Ranieri and Big-RY, how is spearfishing “a bunch of bs” and why should “it be banned?” It’s obvious you don’t have a clue about the sport, because you are definitely not talking from experience. Would love to hear your “bs” answers….
I wil give him credit for it…because next time he could be a sharks world record catch..lol….
thats an AWESOME catch . I just wish I could have caught it with a rod and reel.
Fishing is BS if you wanna play that game sitting down with bait on a hook waiting for fish to bite try spearfish before you make a comment you will quickly learn learn how hard it is. Do be so closed minded.
Mount HOLLY! Not holley, and you pay people to proof read ?
Thanks Nikkii -our proofreader is on vacation.
Big ry, and Joshua…..how is spear fishing not fishing? Spear fishing takes more skill than conventional fishing. Regardless you still come up with fish, which means you’re still fucking fishing. You guys are just prob to scared to jump in the water and try the new mans sport
Awesome fish. Nice job. Thanks for sharing.
Joh and Big ry. How long can you hold your breath underwater? What kind of physical shape are you in? Are you aware of the the dangers and risks in free diving, its one of thee most dangerous sports next to base jumping… Tank diving with a speargun on the other hand thats something different. This guy held his breath risking a blackout swam down and shot this fish which is extremely hard to see because of their camoflauging capabilities. A noble accomplishment i would say.
I do both and have for over 40 years. Anybody who doesn’t think that spearfishing is a challenge has never done it, can’t physically do it or both. Bottom line is, they are jealous. I spent the day buck tailing of the boat yesterday and din’t catch but 2 shorts on the Sea Girt Reef. All that I kept think was, “if I had a mask and snorkel, I could have went down there and seen that there wasn’t shit around” and I would have went home. Rock On Man….thats a helluva fish.
You’re right…Spearfishing is not fishing.. that’s why it’s called just that. It is much more intense , physically strenuous, and much more of a challenge than “baiting and waiting”..I’m sure you never have experienced this for yourselves because if you had you wouldn’t be saying this. You should be happy for the guy instead of putting the sport down..
Hey I’ve been spearfishing my whole life in Hawaii and recently got my gear sent to the east cost I’ve been trying to meet new people to dive with but everyone seems to be secretive. I was wondering if anyone could help me out
The problem with people today is they open their mouth and have no clue what they are talking about. I bet both BIG-RY and Joshua are to FAT to put a wetsuit on to even get in the water, hell they would breath the tank dry in 5 minutes, because they would be to scared. Shut up the both of you are a bunch go ignorant A**holes. Nice catch
Congrats Tim.,Just awesome, glad it was some one from Burlington County.
It’s not fishing if ya can’t drink a beer while doing it……lol. I kid…I kid. Nice catch!
I was in TURKEY back in 2010 for an family emergency . I was shopping down at the fish market and saw this huge summer fluke . I jad never seen one that big in person before so before you know it i spending 200 euro on a r&r to see if i could catch some amd apparently every fjsh i caught out of the bospurous straight were pretty darn big compared to any fluke i ever caught here
It’s underwater hunting!
The exact same thing as deer hunting!
AWESOME JOB BUDDY!
I have been spearfishing since I was 12 years old. First of all, you have to be in really good physical shape to even consider taking up the sport. Next, you have to be OK with doing something that is extremely dangerous. Situations that are a minor inconvenience on the surface can be deadly under water, especially when free diving. I am a trained commercial diver and EMT-Diver, so I know of what I speak. In the Northeast the water clarity is not ideal, your quarry are extremely spooky, and the water temperature is low most of the time. If you dive from shore like we do, you have to walk long distances along rocky shorelines, and battle through surf and riptides to get to where the fish are….maybe, heh heh. Then there are the idiot boaters who come over to see what that red and white flag is….arrrrrrghhh! Then of course in the event that you actually get to shoot something, you then have the dubious honor of dragging it’s bleeding carcass through water where you are NOT always the alpha predator. Spearfishing is kind of like duck hunting, only you have to hold your breath the whole time. And like ducks, fish are not hard to HIT, but they are easy to MISS! I am 64 years old now, and haven’t spearfished for a while. I am grateful now that I enjoy conventional fishing just as much….and that it is sooooooo much easier!
That is one hell of a fluke, I would love to see it hanging off one of my BUCKTAILS…
I have not spear fished, but I do fish in the conventional way. I have no doubt that spear fishing is more difficult (and risky) just from what I’ve read here. Why all the negativity against spear fishing? We all all have a common goal – to catch fish. Why bash a fellow sportsman?
