Product Review: The TUHK Rule

Ice fishermen can use this handy invention to save their tip-up line and spools from nicks and abrasions that can cause frustrating break-offs when the big one finally comes calling. The Original “TUHK” (Tip-Up Hook Keeper) is handcrafted in New England using quality, rust-proof materials. The retainer and adjustment rings are made of stainless steel. The nylon washer secures the hook to the spool and the aluminum ferrule serves as a grip to allow for ease of handling even when wearing gloves.

To use, simply stretch the bungee cord over the spool, secure the hook to the washer, grab the aluminum ferrule and pull it tight. The TUHK holds the hook securely in place and keeps the fishing line tight on the spool, preventing knots, loops and tangles. TUHK’s are adjustable and fit any size spool (custom sizes are also available) and come with a lifetime warranty.

TUHK’s are available online at www.OpenSeasonSpecialties.com or by calling 508-971-5131. Cost is $14.95 for a package of five.

I was given a set of these ice season before last and I whole-heartedly recommend them. I have since purchased 2 more sets for my panfish and pike rigs. I have tried attaching a cork to the bottom of my tip-ups to hold the hook; I have tried velcro strips that cover the spool and hook, but this is the BEST solution to putting away your tip-ups at the end of the day, and it ensures they will be in top condition and ready to go when you venture out the next time, no tangled lines or hooks catching on anything. It takes a little practice to master the wrap technique, but once you do it a few times, it becomes fast and easy. It’s definitely one of those marvelously simple and perfect inventions that has everyone scratching their heads and asking “Why didn’t I think of that?”
