Quantum continues to add to its saltwater spinning reel lineup with a new bait-feeder-style spinning reel, the Merit Freeliner.
In 2025, Quantum introduced the Merit as a saltwater spinning reel that had premium features in an affordable package, such as sealing to IPX6 standards against water, salt, and sand, the CFX200 Carbon Fiber Extreme Drag System, and a lightweight graphite body. Now, fishermen can get a Merit perfectly suited to bait fishing from surf, boat, or kayak in the Free-Liner.
The Merit Free-Liner’s bait-feeder feature lets anglers disengage the primary “fighting drag” to activate a lighter, adjustable rear drag. This allows a fish to take a live or cut bait without feeling resistance, making it more likely to fully engulf the bait for a better hookset. Bait-feeders also help prevent big fish from folding over sand spikes and dragging rods and reels into the surf. When it’s time to set the hook, a simple turn of the handle re-engages the front drag.
What sets the Free-Liner apart from other bait-feeder reels is the Sealoq 6 technology, which protects the gearbox and drag system against water, salt, and sand. It’s one of only a few sealed bait-feeders, and the only one at its price point ($149.95 to $179.95) sealed to IPX6 standards.
The Merit Free-Liner will be available in 4000, 5000, 6000, and 8000 sizes. The 6000 will be the sweet spot for striper fishing with clams and cut bunker from the surf or live bunker or mackerel from the boat. The 8000 will work for surf sharking and bigger game from the boat, with the 35 pounds of drag pressure and smooth drag curve provided by the CFX200 Carbon Fiber drag helping put the brakes on hard-fighting fish.
Look for the Merit Free-Liner to hit tackle shops this October, just in time for some fall run bunker chunking. Learn more at QuantumFishing.com
