Video: Tips and Tricks for Making Your Own Chum

In this video, On The Water's Anthony DeiCicchi gives some useful tips and tricks for making your own chum for shark fishing.

One of the most important ingredients in any offshore shark fishing expedition is chum. That’s why we had Anthony DeiCicchi take his brush chipper and 75 pounds of bluefish out behind the On The Water office to give a quick rundown of his own chum-making techniques before he fished in this year’s Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournament.

Tips for making your own chum:

  • Use the freshest bait possible
  • Don’t freeze your catch prior to feeding it through the brush chipper
  • Mix in other ingredients to give chum extra appeal
  • Store chum in containers that are easy to transport and freeze
  • Review all safety instructions prior to operating a brush chipper
  • Get help and/or supervision from an experienced charter captain or tackle shop operator

Where can I buy fresh bluefish? They can be tough to find on the north shore.
