The white fly hatch on the Housatonic River – Epheron Leukon – is often referred to as the summer blizzard. The hatch usually begins the 1st or 2nd week of August and runs for about weeks. It is one of the most prolific evening hatches on the river – beginning around 8pm and extending to well after dark. The most unusual fact about this hatch is the duns turn into spinners during the hatch and you will have emergers, duns and spinners all on the water at the same time. Most of us fish a tandem rig of two flies – either a size #10 usual or white wulff on the front and a #10 or #12 spinner in the back. Depending on water temperatures – all the denizens of the river come to rise for this hatch – smallmouth bass, brown trout and rainbow trout.
