Grass Shrimping For Winter Trout

One of the best ways to catch winter trout is to chum them up with grass shrimp.

On The Water Sponsors

When cold water temperatures slow down the stillwater fishing to a crawl, fishermen can ignite the bite by taking a popular saltwater bait to the ponds.

While trout living in lakes and ponds don’t encounter grass shrimp, they do encounter scuds and various other freshwater invertebrates, and during the winter months, when few flies are hatching, trout survive on these subaquatic insects. A grass shrimp looks like a super-sized scud, and trout won’t hesitate to scarf them down. A gallon of shrimp, with some used as chum and some as hook baits, will get the trout feeding below your boat and fire up some of the hottest trout fishing of the year.
