Reader Ben Bohnenberger of Mashpee, Massachusetts shared this video of a recent shark encounter. Ben was spearfishing in Cape Cod waters when a sand tiger shark took an interest in a tautog he speared.
Sand tiger sharks are a docile, non-aggressive species, known to attack humans only when bothered first. Individuals reach up to 10.5 feet in length, although most found in Cape Cod waters are juveniles, measuring less than 4 feet.

Thats awesome
is the best I like it
*Sand shark… Dog fish… Not a sand tiger shark. A sand tiger shark is this -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sand_tiger_shark
No, that is a sand tiger.
Any relation to Dan Bohnenberger? With that last name I’m guessing yes…
yes he is my uncle
he clearly was trying to feed the fish to the shark
why else would his arm be outstretched straight down almost poking it
also was that 16 inch or are there no size regs for spear fishing?
Bobby, that fish was still fighting and it really got lively when IT saw the shark, so NOT trying to feed it.
of course he was. he didn’t want to but if you bring the fish close to you, you risk being bitten by the shark accidentally as it tries to grab the fish
i tried to hold it away from myself so the shark wouldn’t miss and hit me. i had many previous encounters with the sharks at that location and they are very investigative and go straight for my speared tautog and it was 16 inches
Where was this location
Isn’t spearfishing illegal in mass?
Not sure on the spearfish regs in Mass. Have to check out the CMRs. Fish taken by any method must be of legal size. Definitely not a 16″ tog. Yes that is a sand tiger, and yes it looks like he was feeding the tog to the shark.
anyone in there right mind if u see a shark and u have a spear in ur hand regardless of a fish on it or not u will continue to use that spear to DEFEND yourself from ending up in the ER
