In the early weeks of the spring run, anglers on Cape Cod get a shot at the elusive weakfish. More abundant in waters south of Massachusetts, weakfish are truly a prized catch in Cape Cod waters. While some years are better than others, there must be at least small handful of these fish that migrate into the Cape’s estuaries each spring.
Often times, weakfish are a by-catch of early season striper fishing. However, there are a few techniques that anglers can use to stack the deck in their favor when targeting weakfish on Cape Cod.
During season 11 of On The Water’s Angling Adventures, Chris Megan and Jimmy Fee used small soft plastic jigs to hunt these uncommon gamefish while wading through the bays and backwater estuaries of the Upper Cape. Using light tackle to target weakfish after the doldrums of winter, Chris and Jimmy enjoy the best weakfish action they’ve seen in years.
